Learn, pitch, and prosper – only at State of Search
The digital space is supposed to be a pure meritocracy. But as ongoing conversations in both digital and marketing circles demonstrate, that hasn’t translated into real-world parity. Across the industry, women contribute around 30% of pitches received by conference organizers. This year barely 20% of speaking pitches for State of Search came from women. This raises the question: How do we fix this?
One conference can’t do it all, but at State of Search we can — and will — do our part.
Thus Elevation Breakfast was born.
What is Elevation Breakfast?
On Tuesday morning, at 7:45, digital marketing women and their male supporters are encouraged to join us for breakfast and discussion about shifting the balance across industry events. This will not just be people talking shop. This will be people trying to make a difference. Topics will include how to pitch, how to find or be a mentor, and other ways we can empower more women to step up and claim their place as speakers and thought leaders.
When we chose the name Elevation Breakfast, we meant business. And our moderator is exactly the right person for the job.
Jennifer Slegg of The SEMPost is not only a content rock star who’s been published everywhere from The Washington Post to USA Today, and not only the go-to genius on Google Panda, she’s been presenting at conferences for over ten years – to, we might add, rave reviews.
Just check out these panelists
We’re fortunate to have remarkable women attending and speaking at State of Search. Which is why our panel is a virtual Who’s Who of badassery.
Maile Ohye, Developer Programs Tech Lead with Google, is a Webmaster Tools rock star. She’s not only responsible for some of the most important projects out there (rel=”canonical” anyone?), she’s a noted SEO speaker tapped for keynotes at a long list of conferences – including State of Search.
Purna Virji, Senior Training Manager at Microsoft, is a quadruple threat with extensive knowledge of PPC, SEO, analytics, and content strategy. Basically, what Purna doesn’t know might not be worth knowing.
Kelsey Jones, Executive Editor at Search Engine Journal, moderates and podcasts and presents on all things digital. Founder of StoryShout, she’s been in the game since 2007 and still manages to find time to make the Marketing ThinkTank webinars pop.
The idea of the Elevation Breakfast is not to solve all the tech world’s issues with gender. But the goal is for people to walk out of the room with a mentorship plan in the works. We want women to have access to a network where it’s useful to float pitch ideas, practice speaking, get honest feedback – even have a place to get slide decks reviewed.
Even more than that, we hope to plant a seed for a future that brings the best minds to the marketing table every time by removing the barriers to full participation for everyone. That’s worth getting up early, mm?
