Google’s Gary Illyes Returns to State of Search

He’s baaaaack…

Gary Illyes, Google Webmaster Tools Analyst speaking at State of Search in Dallas 15
Google’s Gary Illyes drew a huge crowd when he rocked that magnificent black hat on the stage at State of Search in 2015 – this year you get to ask him your questions as he joins noted search journalist Jennifer Slegg for some plain-talking Q&A.

We’re thrilled to announce the return of Google’s own Gary Illyes to State of Search in 2017.

It’s been two years since Gary walked the stage in Dallas, and this year he sits down for an in-depth conversation with the one and only Jennifer Slegg, author of the Google Panda Algo Guide. To use a Texas analogy, this ain’t Jennifer’s first rodeo, and y’all can be sure she’s gearing up to ask Gary all kinds of questions about Google’s algorithm updates in 2017, and of course, the impending mobile first index.

Once the ground is laid and Gary is hitting his straps, the floor will open up to the audience! So if you’ve ever wanted to ask Gary a question, you’ll get your chance. And if you want that answer, but would rather stay out of the limelight, you can reach out @jenstar and get Jennifer to ask them for you.

Who is Gary Illyes?

Leaving aside the obvious – “House Elf and Chief of Sunshine and Happiness at Google” according to his Twitter bio – Gary Illyes is an interesting guy. Former war correspondent, world explorer, highly qualified diver, extreme sports lover, prolific photographer, and friend to fishes everywhere. Thankfully a whole lot more Illya Kuryakin than Austin Powers, the International Man of Mystery tag sits well on him.

Gary is also a webmaster trends analyst at Google, dedicated to creating better search experiences for users by helping webmasters create amazing websites. When he’s not spreading sunshine and happiness and crunching data at Google to improve web search, Gary contributes to the Webmaster Central Blog and helps users debug their websites in the Google Webmaster Forums. Follow him on Twitter @methode and come meet him in person at State of Search.

Who is asking the questions?

Returning to Dallas from her home in Victoria, British Columbia, Jennifer Slegg again brings her incredible search marketing expertise to State of Search. One of the early pillars of the digital marketing world, she’s been in the industry since 1999, and that gives her a unique historical perspective of the changing landscape of SEO and SEM. She also founded the SEMPost, where she’s gained access to some of the most brilliant minds in digital marketing, and is the brains behind JenSense, where she specializes in content monetization and audits.

We’re excited to have both of these brilliant minds together on one stage, and we’re looking forward to seeing where the conversation goes.
